What do you really like? Introducing the "LIKE LIST" challenge!

Have you ever paused to wonder what makes you happy?  We often get caught in the routines of life, chasing after goals or pleasing others (family, friends, colleagues), without stopping to ask ourselves, "What do I genuinely enjoy?"

Self-discovery isn't just about uncovering great discoveries. It's also about the small, everyday joys that add up to a life well-lived.

Here's a simple exercise to uncover what lights you up.

The "Like List" Challenge

  1. Grab a notebook or a diary or your favorite note-taking app.

  2. Set a timer for 10 minutes. The goal is to write freely without overthinking. Stick to 10 minutes.

  3. Start listing everything you like.  Think big and small.

    1. Favorite foods, activities, hobbies, places to visit.

    2. Things you like about yourself or others

    3. Books, movies, music genres

    4. Memories that make you smile

    5. Activities you enjoy doing

    6. Simple pleasures (a hot cup of coffee, a walk in the park, a hug from a friend, seeing your kids playing with each other etc.)

    7. Others.. don't stick to just this list. What lights you up?

  4. Don't remove anything from the list.  Just let the words flow.  Even if it seems silly or insignificant, write it down. The first few minutes will go fast but use the rest of the minutes to uncover deeper things.

  5. Reflect on your list.  Time's up! Are there any surprises?  Any common themes?

  6. Highlight the ones that make you particularly excited.

Why This Works

  • You learn more about yourself. We rarely pause and reflect on ourselves, on what makes us truly excited.

  • Sparks ideas: Your "like list" can become a source of inspiration for new experiences, hobbies, or even career paths.

  • Prioritizes joy:  In a world full of "you should do that", work and obligations, this exercise reminds you of the simple things that bring you pleasure.

What's Next?

  • Take action:  If you find something on your list that you haven't done in a while, make time for it this week.

  • Repeat the exercise regularly: Your "like list" will evolve as you do.  It's a snapshot of your current interests and passions.

The most exciting journeys often start with a simple question:

What do you like?
